The short answer is that the archipelago can be visited all year round, but the experience changes quite a bit depending on the season — and choosing well can make all the difference to your itinerary.

The climate of São Tomé and Príncipe throughout the year
São Tomé and Príncipe has a hot, humid equatorial climate all year round, with average temperatures between 21°C and 32°C. The sea stays warm throughout the year, around 30°C, especially between January and February. The archipelago is divided into two main seasons: the rainy season and the dry season, known locally as gravana.

Dry Season (Gravana): June to September
For most travellers, the gravana is the best time to visit São Tomé and Príncipe. During these months rain is scarce, days are hot and partly cloudy, and temperatures become milder. It's the ideal time for:
- Beach days and diving, with good visibility
- Hiking inland, since the trails are less muddy
- Humpback whale watching, especially between July and September

July and August tend to be the most sought-after months for travellers who prioritise dry, cool weather for exploring the island. There's a good practical reason for this too: the Gravana coincides exactly with the school holiday period in Portugal — June, July, August and part of September — which makes these months the natural choice for most Portuguese families.

Rainy Season: October to May
Don't be put off by the name — the rainy season has its own advantages too. It's the period when vegetation is at its most lush, waterfalls run at full flow and the landscape takes on even more intense shades of green. This is the ideal time for anyone who wants to explore the rainforest and see the waterfalls at their finest. Within this season there are two moments that deserve special mention:

December and January are excellent months for the beach and for birdwatching and orchids in bloom.

From September to April, sea turtle nesting season usually takes place on the beaches of São Tomé and Príncipe — a unique experience for anyone travelling with that in mind. But there's an important detail: this can only be witnessed by staying at a hotel right on the beach.
