Morocco's highest waterfalls, about 110 metres tall, rainbows in the spray, Barbary macaques on the trail and lunch by the river.

Full day (about 10 hours 30 minutes) 1–8 travelers Morocco

The Ouzoud Waterfalls are the highest in Morocco: the water drops about 110 metres in several steps, among olive and fig trees, and by late morning there is almost always a rainbow.

On this day trip from Marrakech you walk down to the foot of the falls on a path where Barbary macaques live, stop at the riverside cafés for lunch and climb back up the other side. It is about three hours' drive through the Tadla plains and the olive groves of the Middle Atlas.

How to get to the Ouzoud Waterfalls

Ouzoud is about 150 km north-east of Marrakech, near the village of Tanaghmeilt in the Azilal region. There is no practical direct public transport, so a day trip with hotel pick-up is the easiest way.

Things to do at Ouzoud

  • Walk down to the foot of the falls through the olive trees.
  • See the Barbary macaques, which live wild along the path. Please don't feed them.
  • Have lunch by the river with a view of the falls.
  • Boat ride close to the falls, paid locally, when the water level allows.

Wear comfortable shoes: the path has steps and can be damp. Spring is the best time to see the falls in full flow.
