São Tomé and Príncipe Holidays: Tours, Prices and How to Plan
Luciano Baetz · 27 August 2026
What a holiday to São Tomé and Príncipe really costs, the four kinds of trip available, what a proper tour includes and when to go. From an operator with its own team on the islands.
Holidays to São Tomé and Príncipe cost between £2,000 and £2,500 per person for eight days, including flights, accommodation, a guide and transport. There are no direct flights from the UK — you connect through Lisbon — and a guided tour is the practical way to see the islands, because tourist infrastructure is minimal.
This is the guide we wish had existed when we started operating here: what kinds of trip are actually available, what each one really costs, what a proper tour should include, and how to work out whether this country suits you. Written plainly, because São Tomé and Príncipe is not for everyone.
The four kinds of trip you can take
1. Small-group guided tour
What most visitors choose. A fixed 8 to 11-day itinerary with a local guide, a 4x4 and driver, accommodation booked in advance and excursions included. Groups are usually four to twelve people.
Best for: anyone with a week to spare who doesn't speak Portuguese and would rather not spend the holiday solving logistics.
Land price: from €1,250 per person, flights extra.
2. Private tailor-made tour
The same route, run just for you, on your dates and at your pace, with a vehicle, driver and guide to yourselves.
Best for: couples, families, honeymoons, and anyone who can't work around group departure dates.
Price: 20-40% above the group tour, depending on numbers.
3. Independent travel
Hire a 4x4, book your own accommodation and arrange excursions once you arrive.
Best for: travellers with some Portuguese, previous independent Africa experience and room in the schedule for things to go wrong.
Price: €950-1,200 per person on the ground, travelling as a pair. Less of a saving than most people expect.
4. All-inclusive beach holidays
Worth being clear about: there are no all-inclusive resorts in São Tomé and Príncipe in the Caribbean or Canary Islands sense. The closest equivalent is an eco-lodge on half board, simply because there is nowhere else to eat nearby. If you want a wristband, a buffet and evening entertainment, this is the wrong destination.
How much a São Tomé and Príncipe holiday costs
A realistic breakdown for eight days from the UK:
- Flights London–São Tomé via Lisbon: £600-1,100 return, depending on season and how far ahead you book
- Eight-day guided tour on the ground: from €1,250 per person
- Tourist tax: €2.10 per person per night, paid in cash on arrival at the airport
- Travel insurance with medical evacuation: £40-80
- Spending money, tips and meals not included: £130-220
Total: roughly £2,000 to £2,500 per person.
This is a mid-priced destination rather than a budget one, for concrete reasons: there is no airline competition on the route, almost everything is imported, and the whole country has very few hotel beds, so there is no price war. What you get in return are beaches with nobody on them and a country that has not yet been turned into a product.
What a proper tour includes
Operators include very different things, which is why two similar-looking quotes often aren't comparable. A serious tour here should cover:
- A guide with you for the whole trip, not just on selected excursions. In a Portuguese-speaking country with almost no tourism industry, this changes the entire experience.
- A 4x4 with driver and insurance. The southern roads are rough and nobody drives them after dark.
- Accommodation split across regions — interior, south and capital — rather than one base with three-hour drives every day.
- Main excursions pre-booked, including the boat crossing to Ilhéu das Rolas.
- Half board at minimum. In the south and the interior there is nowhere to eat outside your lodge, so if it isn't included you pay for it anyway.
- Airport transfers and local support throughout.
Our eight-day tour covers all of the above plus 17 meals (7 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 4 dinners), including two special ones: lunch at the Almada Negreiros Museum restaurant and a gourmet tasting lunch at the plantation of chef João Carlos Silva, well known in Portugal for the television series Na Roça com os Tachos.
The eight-day itinerary
- Day 1 — Arrival. Airport pick-up, currency exchange into dobras, and a night at Roça Santa Luzia, a colonial plantation house turned hotel deep in the rainforest.
- Day 2 — The Coffee Route. Climbing to 800 metres: the town of Trindade, Roça Monte Café, the Almada Negreiros Museum and the Milagrosa waterfall.
- Day 3 — Southern beaches. The world's largest open-air laundry at the mouth of the Abade river, Roça Água Izé, Boca do Inferno and the Pico Cão Grande viewpoint. Night at Inhame Eco Resort.
- Day 4 — Ilhéu das Rolas. Boat crossing to the Equator monument, where you stand in both hemispheres at once.
- Day 5 — Free day in the south. Beaches such as Praia Piscina, minutes from the lodge.
- Day 6 — Food and viewpoints. The Cauê river lookout, Ribeira Peixe waterfall and the gourmet lunch at Angolares. Night at Hotel Omali.
- Day 7 — The Cocoa Route. A working cocoa cooperative, the Baobab Route, Lagoa Azul, Praia dos Tamarindos and Roça Agostinho Neto.
- Day 8 — São Tomé city. São Sebastião Museum, Independence Square, the market, and departure.
Best time to visit
The best season is the gravana, the dry season, from June to September: clear days, better road conditions and calm seas. It also coincides with humpback whale season, roughly July to October.
The rainy season, October to May, is not a bad time at all: rain comes in short heavy afternoon showers, and it is when sea turtles nest on the southern beaches, from September to April. There is also a dry break in January, the gravanito, with excellent weather and lower prices.
If we had to pick one month: September — the only one where whales and turtles overlap, with prices already below August.
Getting there from the UK
There are no direct flights. The route is London → Lisbon → São Tomé (TMS) with TAP Air Portugal, around 13 hours door to door. The Lisbon leg takes about six and a half hours and does not run daily, so the flight schedule sets your travel dates rather than the other way round.
British citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 15 days; a passport valid for six months is enough.
Guided tour or independent travel?
We run tours, so here is the honest version: it depends, and the price gap is smaller than people assume — around €100-250 per person over eight days.
Go independently if you have ten days or more and there are four of you to share a 4x4. Take a tour if you have exactly a week, you're travelling as a couple or alone, and you'd rather someone local handled the problems: a breakdown 70 km from the capital, a lodge with no record of your booking, or an excursion cancelled by rough seas.
Who this trip suits — and who it doesn't
You'll love it if you want nature without crowds, you're curious about colonial history and cocoa, you don't mind a lodge with no hairdryer, and you enjoy spending a whole day on a beach without seeing another person.
It isn't for you if you want a resort with entertainment, you need fast wifi, you're unwilling to take malaria prophylaxis, or you're expecting lions and elephants — the islands were never joined to the mainland and have no large mammals.
Questions to ask before you book
- Does the guide stay with the group for the entire tour? Many operators provide a guide only on certain days.
- Exactly how many meals are included? "Half board" can mean seven meals or seventeen.
- Is it a 4x4 with a driver, or a self-drive hire car? In the south it matters.
- Where do you sleep each night? Ask for lodge names, not star ratings.
- What's the maximum group size per departure?
- Who actually operates the trip on the ground? Some agencies resell without any local team.
- What happens if weather cancels an excursion?

Frequently asked questions
Around £2,000-£2,500 per person for eight days from the UK, including flights, accommodation, guide, transport and most meals.
Eight days for São Tomé island, and ten or eleven if you also want Príncipe, which requires two light-aircraft flights.
Yes. It is one of Africa's calmest countries — no armed conflict, no terrorism, and violent crime is very rare. The real risks are malaria, limited medical care and the southern roads.
Not for stays of up to 15 days. For longer trips there is an online e-Visa. Your passport must be valid for six months.
No. The closest option is a half-board eco-lodge, because there are no restaurants nearby.
Only in a few hotels in the capital, and not reliably. This is a cash economy: bring euros and change them into dobras on arrival.
Yellow fever certification is only required if you arrive from a country with active transmission — not when flying from the UK via Lisbon. Malaria prophylaxis is the important one.
The gravana, from June to September, is the dry season and the best time to go. September is the only month when whale season and turtle nesting overlap.
