Kendwa Beach, Zanzibar: Full Moon Party and Beachfront Nightlife
Luciano Baetz · 27 de agosto de 2026
A complete guide to Kendwa beach, Zanzibar: Full Moon Party, nightlife, tides and where to stay. Practical tips for 2027.
Kendwa sits on Zanzibar's northwest coast, right next to Nungwi, and shares with its neighbour a rare advantage on the island: a much gentler tide than on the east coast, keeping the beach and sea good for swimming practically all day.
Kendwa is best known for the Full Moon Party, a beach party held once a month, on the night of the full moon, with DJs, fire dancers and hundreds of people on the sand — one of the most iconic nightlife events on the Indian Ocean. It's worth checking the exact dates before booking your trip, since they follow the lunar calendar.
The event traditionally takes place at Kendwa Rocks, a beach bar and resort that, even outside party nights, is one of the island's best spots to watch the sunset, with tables in the sand and an unobstructed view over the ocean.
Kendwa is about an hour from Zanzibar's airport and around an hour and a half from Stone Town, making it a practical choice both for unwinding on arrival and for a lively last night before the flight home.
Beyond the parties, Kendwa offers relaxed beach days, snorkelling and diving on the nearby reefs, and sunset dhow cruises — a good base for balancing nightlife with quieter days.
Kendwa is often compared with Nungwi: Kendwa is smaller and less built-up, without the same density of restaurants and shops, and revolves more around a handful of beach resorts; Nungwi has more infrastructure and a livelier village feel by day.
Accommodation in Kendwa ranges from simple, backpacker-oriented options to mid- and high-range resorts, most right on the beachfront with easy walking access to Kendwa Rocks.
The best time to visit is June to October and December to February; March to May brings the heaviest rainy season, with frequent, strong downpours.
