Jambiani Beach, Zanzibar: Tides, Jozani Forest and Quiet Charm

A complete guide to Jambiani beach, Zanzibar: tides, Jozani Forest, spice tours and where to stay. Practical tips for 2027.

Jambiani, on Zanzibar's southeast coast, is a former fishing village that still keeps a slow, unhurried pace, with long stretches of white sand, simple coral-stone houses and women working the seaweed farms by the water — one of the most authentic sights on the island.

The tide in Jambiani is particularly dramatic: at low tide, the sea retreats hundreds of metres, exposing sandbanks and seaweed farms, while at high tide the water reaches close to the houses and resorts. It's worth planning swims and walks around the day's tide chart.

A few minutes from Jambiani lies Jozani Forest, the largest remaining area of natural forest in Zanzibar and the only place on Earth where the Zanzibar red colobus lives, an endangered, endemic primate. A guided walk through the forest and the raised mangrove boardwalk is one of the best half-day excursions from the southeast coast.

From Jambiani it's also easy to arrange a spice tour, visiting plantations that grow cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla — one of Zanzibar's most popular cultural activities, usually including spice and tropical fruit tastings.

Jambiani is often compared with Paje, further north: while Paje thrives on kitesurfing and a young, lively atmosphere, Jambiani keeps a quieter, more family-friendly profile, ideal for travellers seeking calm without giving up good access to excursions.

The village is roughly 50km, about an hour's drive, from Zanzibar's airport — a distance that helps preserve the area's more authentic, less touristy feel.

Popular activities include swimming at high tide, walking the beach at low tide to watch the seaweed farms, cycling around the village, and fresh seafood dinners at sunset.

Accommodation in Jambiani ranges from simple, family-run guesthouses to small beachfront boutique resorts, generally on a more intimate scale than the island's northern areas.
